Your 10-step RECA licensing process
Here's an honest, 10-step guide with pro-tips on how to become a real estate agent in Alberta.
STEP 1
Check your eligibility
Ensure you meet RECA's basic requirements:
- Be at least 18 years of age
- Be able to provide an accepted form of valid government-issued identification
- Have a Canadian high school diploma or equivalent
- Be able to study and work in Canada

STEP 2
Create your myRECA account
Your portal with the regulator. Your myRECA account can be used to enrol in courses, book your exam, and manage your license.

Relo Tip: Once you create your account, have your RECA Contact ID number handy. You'll need it for Step 4.
STEP 3
Submit your background check
Provide a certified criminal record check (CRC) immediately after creating your myRECA account. The CRC can take 6-8 weeks to process. You can (and should) complete this while you study (Step 5).

STEP 4
Enrol with Relo
Register for one of our RECA-recognized courses. Have your RECA Contact ID ready when you sign up.

STEP 5
Master your adaptive pre-license education
First, you'll take an assessment to help us determine what you currently know and receive a personalized study plan. Next, you'll study your tailored path with adaptive quizzes that are assessing your progress and reinforcing topics until you master them. Finally, you'll achieve a ReadyRating score of 4 or higher, watch all video lessons, and pass two practice exams to complete the courses. That'll provide you with a real-time prediction of your odds of passing, so you know when to book your exam.
STEP 6
Start your brokerage search
Begin networking and interviewing with brokerages while you're studying. Your license must be held by an authorized real estate brokerage in Alberta.
STEP 7
Pass the RECA exam
Achieving a ReadyRating of 4 or higher, watching all video lessons, and passing two practice exams are the requirements for course completion on Relo. Once completed, book and pay for your pre-licensing exam through your myRECA account. You need a passing grade of 70% on the RECA pre-licensing exam, and you have two attempts. Effective July 1, 2026, all RECA pre-licensing exams must be written in person at an authorized Pearson VUE test centre. If you booked an online exam before July 1, 2026, you may still complete it online.
STEP 8
Secure your brokerage
Your chosen brokerage will give you the necessary employment and sponsorship documentation for RECA.
STEP 9
Apply for your license
With your education complete, exam passed, background check cleared, and brokerage onboarded, complete the final licensing application to RECA.
STEP 10
Get activated
Once approved by RECA, your license is activated. Congratulations, you're licensed to practice residential real estate in Alberta! You can also use this credential if you're moving elsewhere in Canada.

To get your real estate licence in Alberta, you generally follow RECA’s pathway: confirm eligibility, create your myRECA account, submit a criminal record check, complete RECA-recognized pre-licensing education, book and pass the RECA pre-licensing exam, secure a sponsoring brokerage, then submit your licensing application for activation.
RECA requires that you meet basic eligibility requirements such as being 18+, providing valid government ID, having a Canadian high school diploma (or equivalent), and being able to study and work in Canada. Requirements can change, so always confirm in your myRECA guidance and RECA documentation.
Your myRECA account is your portal with the regulator. You’ll use it to manage key parts of the licensing process such as course enrolment steps, exam booking, and licensing administration.
